Iranian President Orders Comprehensive Report on the Miankaleh Petrochemical Project

Hassan Abbaszadeh, CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC), announced that he has received an official and written directive from the President of Iran, mandating the preparation of a comprehensive report on the Miankaleh petrochemical project — a project long surrounded by environmental controversies.

Abbaszadeh stated that the implementation of this project was initially conditioned upon obtaining the necessary environmental approvals. It was intended to develop a methanol production chain and related downstream industries using natural gas. However, the project failed to secure the required environmental permits from the outset, and no licenses were issued for its operation thereafter.

He also referred to reports indicating suspicious activities at the project site, such as unauthorized installation of surveillance cameras. In response, the President has instructed the provincial authorities, particularly Mazandaran Governorate, to exercise strict oversight and prevent any unauthorized actions.

Emphasizing that NPC has not issued any permits for the Miankaleh project, Abbaszadeh clarified that the matter lies outside the company’s scope of responsibility. Any ongoing activities must be carried out within legal frameworks and under the supervision of competent authorities.

He concluded by noting that a detailed and documented report on the current status of the project is being prepared and will be submitted to relevant organizations to facilitate informed and lawful decision-making.
