Ahvaz’s Green Belt: A Missed Environmental Lifeline

As Ahvaz continues to suffer under the weight of relentless dust storms, the project once envisioned as a green shield for the city remains trapped in delays and indecision. The Green Belt of Ahvaz, originally introduced as a major environmental initiative to combat air pollution, now stands as a symbol of unfulfilled potential and fading commitment.

The plan aimed to encircle the city with layers of trees and vegetation, reducing the impact of dust storms and helping stabilize the surrounding soil. However, only a small portion of the project has been implemented—and much of that has suffered damage from floods and chronic water shortages.

Reports reveal a lack of clear leadership and coordination among responsible agencies, leading to the project’s stagnation. Despite its critical role in improving air quality and public health, poor maintenance, mismanagement, and inadequate financial planning have turned the Green Belt from a hopeful solution into a source of environmental disappointment.
